CORONAVIRUS CURE FOUND BY NIGERIAN TRADITIONAL, COMPLEMENTARY AND ALTERNATIVE MEDICINE DEPARTMENT
A memo making rounds on the internet expresses that The Federal Government has made a remarkable breakthrough in finding cure for the novel Coronavirus wildly referred to as COVID-19.
This was contained in a letter written to Director General, National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control, NAFDAC, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye by the Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Health, A.A Abdullahi, stating that a herbal cure for COVID-19 has been put together by the ministry’s Traditional Complementary and Alternative Medicine (TCAM) Department.
The letter was dated April 28, 2020, Titled: FORMULATION OF A PHYTO MEDICINE COUGH MIXTURE/SYRUP FOR THE MANAGEMENT OF COVID-19 PATIENTS BY TRADITIONAL, COMPLEMENTARY AND ALTERNATIVE MEDICINE DEPARTMENT OF THE MINISTRY.
According to Abdullahi, the Ministry took the pains to research into scientific materials, hence came up with a formulation intended for the management of cough in COVID-19 and other cough related infections.
Part of the letter reads: “Formulation of cov-herbal cough mixture. Interestingly all the ingredients that make up the formulation are medicinal plants that are widely used as food materials and medicines. They include garlic, onions, ginger,west African black pepper,boobad fruits. The innovation here is composition of the formula.
“This medicinal plants have documented scientific evidences of long use for the management of cough and other respiratory infections, with medicinal properties with mucolytic, antitussive, expectorant, soothing, demulcent, anti-inflammatory and antiviral effects.”
The Ministry of Health also expressed their determination to walk-the-talk in the promotion and integration of herbal medicine into the health care delivery system. As well as stated their desire to show case to Nigerians, the herbal product which they say is 100% sourced locally.
It will be recalled that Nigeria’s COVID-19 cases continue to rise on daily basis with the herbal solution yet to be tried locally or pronounced amid increasing death toll in Nigeria.
