Feminism vs Womanism - Diamond Diepriye

Both feminism and womanism are comprised within the framework of the struggle for women’s rights. However, there are key differences between the two:

Feminism was mainly confined to middle and upper class white women and ignored the needs of black women, whereas womanism is focused on the tridimensional oppression faced by black women (sexism, racism and classism);

Feminists often consider men as their enemies while womanists show solidarity with black men in their struggle against oppression and racism;

Feminism strives for gender equality while womanism aims at gender reconciliation;
Feminists often showed a lack of respect and interest in the rights of non-white women while womanists always took into consideration the rights and needs of black, Latino and white women;

Womanists embrace womanhood and female sexuality whereas feminists often tried to keep the distance from anything feminine – although this is gradually changing;

Feminists defined “women’s rights” on the basis of their personal experience and universalized the concept of “emancipation;” conversely, womanists and black women wanted to “create a criterion by which women of color can assess their realities, both in thought and in action;” and Feminism is female-centered and issue-based whereas womanism centers black women and is equally concerned about all forms of oppression.
